Dogs  Scenic view  Available during winter  Cliff / falling rocks  Bicycles  Horses  Medium hike (1km-10km)

This is a great viewpoint overlooking Deadman's Creek and the Air Force Academy near the top of one of my favorite, little-known trails.

Expect a hike of about 2 miles with 1400-foot elevation gain. The recommended trail is relatively gentle. If you continue up the trail another 1/10 mile, you'll come to a wide open meadow ringed with aspen and fir. Update: Per sassydil's log note, the approach from Tapadero is now closed. The cache is accessible from Schubarth Road and Rd 311 or Rd 313.

There is a cliff near the cache, but there is no need to go down the cliff or even get close to the edge. Keep a close eye on kids and dogs.

Couldn't get there from the east (AFA) last week so went via Wodland Park. Dog had a good hike but we got caught in some rain.

Stopped by to check on the cache today. Replaced the log and the partly-chewed container and the cache is ready for visitors!

Thanks to Mr. Butterfingers, yours truly, the log for the cache is now missing. I would appreciate it if the next finder could bring a new log and plastic bag to put into the cache.

I managed to find this nice cache today while conducting an excursion down the Schubarth Trail. I will not try to repeat too much of what I said in my GC2H882 66 Ways From Sunday cache. I originally passed over this one because my instinct screamed "too tricky Ernie cache." Unfortunately for the cache, once I decided to commit to the Schubarth Trail excursion, I decided to try for this one. It was probably best if I listened to my initial instincts and left it alone.

Although I hiked the other caches along this portion of the trail (MACRO (Tired of Micros). 66 Ways From Sunday, and MACRO'S Little Brother),t I retrieved my vehicle and intended to drive as close as possible to this one. I've underestimated Ernie caches before, and I did not have unlimited time. My instincts were still telling me "trouble ahead," and I preferred to have the vehicle as close as possible. I was able to navigate Schubarth Trail to 311A in my Xterra without any major problems. There was a few tricky spots due to boulders and ice, but nothing too bad. Things began to get complicated while I paused at the intersection with 311A. I spent some time there, trying to decide how to approach this cache and where my dismount point would be. I really struggled to figure out the best way to approach GZ. The cache waypoints did not mesh well the trails as shown on my Garmin 64st. I have found Garmin to be WAY INNACCURATE with trails across the United States; odd since they charge so much money for topo maps. Anyway, not seeing a clear option, I decided to press ahead and hope the terrain would reveal some opportunities.

I eventually made my way to N39 01.684 W104 55.443, a excellent parking spot. A little farther on, 311A started its decent with a clear "no motor vehicles sign." Given sassydil's comments back in 2013, I was not keen to go down this way. From my parking spot, the cache looked only to be about 700 feet away (straight line distance). The terrain looked rather begin, so I decided to see if there was a way to the cache from here. I eventually was able to climb down a draw and intersect with the trail the cache was on. I passed thru N39 01.613 N104 55.421, then fin ally intersected with the trail at N39 01.586 W104 55.412, only 315 feet (straight line distance) up the trail from the cache. Climbing down the draw was very tricky due to scree and loose rocks, some of them quite large. This was clearly not a away the CO intended, was clearly not the best way, but in the end; a way. Despite high winds earlier today, all was calm when I arrived at GZ and found the container quickly. The container did let some water seep through, there was a number of pen and stamp log entries that were fully or partially washed out. As I was handling the log, the gusting wind picked back up and ripped the log out of my hand. Although it was briefly caught on a tree branch, I was not able to grab it before it flew over the edge and dropped down into Deadman's Creek. My heart leapt into my throat, I felt (and still feel) terrible. I did not have a replacement log on me, or on my vehicle. I'll contact the CO directly to fess up to my misdeeds. In the end, I had to be satisfied with a verification picture(s) and dejectedly started my climb back to the Xterra. This is my third major "incident" causing or almost causing damage to a cache by this CO...terrible stat.

While logging the cache, I noticed this one was 29 months lonely. While this was not my motivation for coming here today, it certainly was a nice bonus. Counting only caches that have been lonely for a year or more, to include this cache, I now have "lonely time" for 62 years, 11 months on 39 caches in 11 states and provinces. Thanks to the CO placing this nice cache; but again I must apologize for being the "Angle of Geo-Death" and ruining it.

Was up at the cache. Rehung the container. It looks like it has been chewed on and is probably not water proof anymore

SwimFin found this cache quickly and in good shape. Rescued the Zombie Twins TB, left a signature dolphin key chain, SL. Thanks for placing and maintaining this cache. Cheers, SwimFin.

The Tapedero parking spot is not only posted with many large signs about not entering Academy property , "live fire range", video surveillance, patrolled, etc, in addition to the older barb wire fencing there is a chain link fence across the entry point. Private property adjacent. Guess I'll have to get a proper vehicle and come at it from the west.

I wonder if there is any history associated with the name of this creek? TFTC.

Last find of the day for 1 Dad and 3 Kidz, out on a gorgeous hike, with all the aspens turning colors. Cache is in great shape -- placement is AOK, everything is nice and dry. Stamped the log, traded a little swag, and dropped off 2 trackables very well suited for the DEADman's Creek Overlook -- the Zombie twins BigSmile They want to stay together, being brother and sister, and are on the same little chain, in the same little ziploc. TFTC -- hopefully it won't be another couple years before this one is found.
