Just what you all weren't asking for - another music puzzle! When I was in college I took music theory classes for fun. Yes, you read that right. I knew I was never going to major in music but I loved the structure behind the music. One of the things we worked on was ear training. This is not playing by ear per se but learning how to recognize different sounds and tonalities.

This puzzle will focus on intervals. Intervals are the distance between two notes. They are expressed as a number such as a 2nd or 4th. When there are two notes that are the same, that is referred to as a unison. You always count the lowest note as 1 when measuring the distance. But, as I said, this is ear training - not music reading.

Below you will see the links to two videos. The first is a tutorial to get you familiar with the sound of the intervals. Don't concern yourself with the individual notes so much as the sound. Much like thinking about taste or color, different intervals have a different quality to them - melodic, dissonant, nearer, farther.

Got some help on a couple of music puzzle geocaches, and today was a simply delightful day, so off I went - this was the first of the two that I found. TN-N-SL. Thanks !

Fortunately I know someone who has good ears and made short work of this puzzle: my son! A bit of payback for all those years of costly piano lessons Smile I wish I had more musical ability myself. Maybe I'll dust off the keyboard when I retire... You obviously put a lot of effort into this puzzle cache. Cheers.

Ha, I had to renew my membership to log this cache. Forgot it expired this week.

Easiest way to solve this is to find out that the CO is heading to check on the cache, then secretly follow him like a ninja to see where he goes. Just kidding!

I worked on this a bit, but couldn't get a happy checker. I recruited my music prodigy friend who solved it like doing 2+2. Crazy talent there. After I was able to compare what I got, and what was correct, I saw I was REALLY close which made me happy.

Thanks for another fun music challenge, now to grab the other two I haven't signed yet. Gets a fave! TNLN, lots of TB visits.

Working through this one brought back lots of memories from music classes (a long time ago!). I enjoyed the puzzle, then stopped to hunt before the nearby CITO. No joy. Benj59 went above and beyond as cache owner, because after hosting the CITO, he came to the final with me and turned up the container where it had been dropped in the grass several feet away. I really should have spotted it the first time, or at least stepped on it. Oh well. It gave him the opportunity to put it back in the original position! Thanks, benj59, for the fun puzzle and taking good care of the cache.

I was up in the Denver area this weekend and decided to get some caches that have been on my radar for a while. It took me a couple times through the video to hum all the right intervals, but all those years of music theory and band/orchestra/piano finally paid off! :-P For being in such an urban area, I was pleasantly surprised at how quiet it was at GZ. Hung out for a little longer than usual just to take the sound of the wind and the water in. Thanks for a unique puzzle.

So we went to a different puzzle of yours and did not find that one. Also some guy was standing on his deck staring at me. Time move on to the next I said. Now this one was a most difficult puzzle, but I loved every second of this one. You have taught us all so much about music!! This hide was good, now I admit I was a little nervous since there was a sign that said no trespassing violators will be Prosecuted. I said well let’s do this. Found with no issues except all the poking. Definitely gets a favorite point.
Keeping our streak alive. Thanks for placing this cache and keeping our recreation going. SL/with PoshCacher. Tftc

When I saw this featured in the Geocaching Puzzle of the Day blog, it looked like a lot of fun. Finally sat down today to listen and give it a try. First off, let me say how much I enjoyed listening to you play Oceans Apart in the tutorial. It was beautiful.

Then on to the puzzle. Had to back up a few times to listen to a couple notes, but finally passed the checker. I'm from Minnesota but someday I'll be making a road trip through Colorado and will make sure I stopped. Thanks for a fun and unique puzzle.

Who would have thought that all those hours sitting in theory classes would have paid off in solving a geocaching puzzle years later?!! Signed log. Thanks for a fun creative puzzle cache that definitely earns a fav!
