Rook. (with the period, not sure why) is a 2020 action/comedy independent movie that is 70 minutes long, filmed in Victor and Cripple Creek, Colorado; it is rated 18+ The cast and crew are all from Colorado, based on news reports. As of March 2021, it is only available on streaming services, and some offer it for free.
You do NOT have to watch the movie to get the coordinates to this cache, but you will have to visit eight of the locations where scenes were filmed to answer the simple questions below, which will give you the coordinates to the ammo can container, which makes this a nine stage multi-cache. All eight of the filming locations are easy to get to, and you can park within 50 feet of each (you can also park within 50 feet of the final). I have purposely made up questions that you will not be able to get the answers to by using satellite or street mapping websites. There is one and only one container for this cache, which is the ammo can final.
I had good cell phone coverage at all nine locations.
You will NOT have to enter any businesses or buildings to get the coordinates to the final. Geocaching.com rules preclude us from listing any business names, so none are included here. The last of the eight filming locations is in Mount Pisgah cemetery, in the northwest part of Cripple Creek, and is open from 8am until 5pm daily. There is a gate that is closed outside of those hours, so please plan your adventure accordingly.
There aren't any images from the film in this cache description as we don't want to violate any copyright laws.
For each of the eight locations you will visit, a waypoint is included on this cache page and will download to your device if you save the geocache; GPS coordinates for each are also listed below. The eight locations are not in the order as shown in the movie, as I tried to make this trek from Waypoint “Rook1” to Waypoint “Rook8” as straight-line as possible. The first five are in Victor and are all within a couple blocks of each other. The next two are in downtown Cripple Creek, and the last one is at Mount Pisgah cemetery, northwest of downtown Cripple Creek.
So let's get started !
The ammo can container is at N 38 4A.BCD W 105 1E.FGH
Waypoint Rook1 and 3:22 minutes into the film at N 38 42.684 W 105 08.350 Ben (portrayed by Zack Rush) introduces himself, mentioning his manners, name and that he is single. As of March 2021, this property is for sale, and is included with the blue and yellow house just to the left (west). Under the house number for that blue and yellow house is a sign asking you to “Please Drive Slowly” and watch for three things. Which of the following is NOT one of the three?
If Crazy Snowmobilers is NOT listed, A = 4
If Unruly Kids is NOT listed, A = 5
If Old Farts is NOT listed, A = 2
If Ornery Strays is NOT listed, A = 3
Waypoint Rook2 and 42:00 minutes into the film at N 38 42.630 W 105 08.552, Charlie the Police Officer (portrayed by Heath C. Heine) and Ben go past the front entrance to City Hall (in Victor) and down a wide open walkway on the left (west) side of the building to the entrance to the door of the “Police Department Visitor Center”. Just to the left of that door, you will see a silver box (that can be seen in the movie), which is the keyless entry. What is the brand name shown on the box?
If it is SCHLAGE, B = 8
If it is VIKING, B = 9
If it is ULTRALOQ, B = 7
If it is SIMPLISAFE, B = 6
Waypoint Rook3 and at 15:11 minutes into the film at N 38 42.621 W 105 08.475 we see that Ben and his associate Kyle (portrayed by Omid Harrison) are staying at the local hotel. On this street corner at the entrance to the hotel is a red fire hydrant with blue attachments; it has a two digit number painted on it, on the side facing the hotel entrance.
If that number is 16, C = 3
If that number is 8, C = 5
If that number is 30, C = 7
If that number is 23, C = 9
Waypoint Rook4 and 53:54 minutes into the film at N 38 42.585 W 105 08.410 is the shootout on the street, where Ben, David (portrayed by Bobby Lee Black) and Karaoke Bill (portrayed by Lew Temple) are crouched down in the front of the brown Jeep pickup truck. There are several spots of note here. The doorway entrance to Karaoke Bill’s upstairs home is the northern-most door in the blue building on the west side of the street. The wooden fence that Ben runs through with the bag of money is on the same (west) side of the street, just to the south (down the hill a very short distance). The listed coordinates are the doorway that Karaoke Bill runs into with a tattered sign on it that says “Historic Victor Colorado’s City of Gold Mines”. Not part of this cache, but a quick note: Just south of that doorway is a bakery/café/deli that the cast and crew would eat breakfast at, every day while filming. So, back to the doorway that Karaoke Bill runs to – there is a latch and padlock preventing people from entering that property. What is the brand name on the padlock, that is easily visible (you don’t have to touch or move it to see the name)?
If it is ACE, D = 0
If it is MASTER, D = 2
If it is KWIKSET, D = 4
If it is BRINKS, D = 6
Waypoint Rook5 and 25:00 minutes into the film at N 38 42.544 W 105 08.487 is the church where we first see James “The Minnow”, self-proclaimed “sometimes” priest portrayed by Jordan Leigh. There is another red fire hydrant here, and it has a sticker on it with a square (QR) digital code. Above that code are nine digits. The E here is the same digit, and is E in our puzzle: 42E-50E020
Waypoint Rook6 and 4:13 minutes into the film at N 38 44.812 W 105 10.447 is when we first see the outside of a restaurant that is one of the central points of the movie, which is owned by leading lady Annie who is Ben’s sister (portrayed by Sarah Johanna Jewell). Just to the left of the entrance, one foot off the ground is a utility fixture with a sign above it. What is the utility fixture for?
If it is for Black Hills Utilities, F = 3
If it is for CC Electric, F = 5
If it is for Mutts, F = 7
If it is for Plants, F = 9
Waypoint Rook7 and 12:52 minutes into the film at N 38 44.801 W 105 10.697 is the street corner where Ben first meets with Paul “No Balls” (portrayed by Ben Hilzer) and Mr. Leonard (portrayed by Tom Borrillo), the crime duo looking to buy the gold in exchange for cash. On this street corner which is at the northeast corner of Bennett Avenue and 2nd Street, there is a manhole cover next to the trash can. What is the pattern on the manhole cover?
If it is a fish, G = 0
If it is a bird, G = 2
If it is a tree, G = 4
If it is a donkey, G = 6
Waypoint Rook8 and twice in the movie do we see Ben park the van at the same spot in Mount Pisgah cemetery, at N 38 44.926 W 105 11.746. The first time is at 22:16 and the second time is at 59:12. After parking there the second time and when there is about 10 minutes left in the movie, an action scene takes place WE BELIEVE in a clearing just up the hill, to the south. From the parking spot and listed coordinates, there is a family plot just to the east (about 60 feet in the direction down the paved road, headed back to the gated entrance) that is surrounded by black wrought iron fencing. What is the family name on the granite bench?
