This cache is above the center of the three Waterdog Lakes (elev 11,475 feet), reached by hiking the Waterdog Lakes Trail. The hike to Waterdog Lakes is a short one, but the steady climb will give hikers a workout. Follow the trail around the lake and hike up to the upper lake. The views of the Continental Divide and Banana Mountain are incredible! Goodies and a TB for the FTF.

Congratulations to Keep On Trekking for the FTF on July 2, 2011!!
Directions: From Poncha Springs, CO take US Highway 50 west, traveling towards Monarch Pass. Stay on Hwy 50 for approximately 13.5 miles. You will pass the Monarch Mountain Lodge located on the left side of the highway. From there, continue traveling for 2.75 miles. Watch for a dirt pullout on the left side of the highway at N38 31.886 W106 19.420. The trail is located across the highway at N38 31.897 W106 19.427 from the parking pullout. If you reach the turn-off to Monarch Park campground, you have gone too far.

The trail to Waterdog Lakes is steep but relatively easy to navigate in the deep winter snow. It is a favorite among local snowshoers! Note: Snowshoes required for winter access.

Out with a group of friends and needed a cache or 2 along the way. This one made the list. Made the climb up the hillside only to find that I could see the container but wasn't to sure how to get to it. Well this is Geo Caching and one needs to be resourceful and within a few minutes I had it in my hand. The lid was a little tight but it did open. What a great view. TFTC SL

We found it! It was a bit tough to get open, but we got it. You'll have a great view once you find it.

I looked everywhere at the base of the rock formation and the trees, but did not see it. Too bad, since I wanted to rescue the geocoin.

The view of the lakes was worth the hike up through the sleet, rain and mosquitoes.

This cache was well worth the hike and I wish conditions (weather and snow) were more friendly so we could spend more time here. My son and I made the hike up from lake level, punching into snow knee deep in spots, while my daughter and husband waited at the lake. I assume there is a trail around the lake but the amount of snow made it impossible to find. My son found the cache but we couldn't open it so we took a photo to prove we were there. Really neat cache and a favorites point for a nice hide and excellent location. TFTC

Fun find! I got somewhat lost afterward but it's such a beautiful area it didn't matter. Left a geocoin.
