Take a road trip to a historic lime kiln up the Lost Canyon Road! Upper Lost Canyon Road is closed in the spring until May 15th. The Lost Canyon Road (CR 743) is accessible from HWY 135 via CR 10. It is a rough, dirt road which requires a high clearance, SUV-type vehicle. There is a "respect private property" sign nearby, but the kiln and geocache are on Forest Service land. Elevation at the cache: 10,012'The lime kiln dates back to the 1800's, and is built out of rocks which were found in the area. Limestone or calcite was baked into lime, which was used for concrete, chinking for log cabins, and flux for the smelting process in some mines. What was this kiln doing all the way out here, so far away from everything?!
The cache is in a clear plastic box with a blue rim.
There is another lime kiln geocache way up the Lost Canyon Road, called the "Cliffside Lime Kiln". You could make a fun afternoon excursion looking for both geocaches.
Hunting season advisory: Colorado hunting season is in September and October. If you venture out during this time, wear some blaze orange and be noisy.

06/16/2016 By cb_beauty TFTC!! We took the long way to get here from the Signal Peak cache. It was a very long 4x4 drive through fields and forests. We encountered grazing cows and even had to winch a tree out of the way to get through. We made it to the kiln and signed the log. We will try to finish flutiste's kiln series this summer.
06/16/2016 By SoldierGrrrl CB_Beauty and I started our "Summer of Lonely Caches" yesterday in an attempt to update/liven up some lonely caches that have not been found in at least 2 years. Today we saw two lime kilns and Gunnison from high elevation.
Oh, my. We started out to get this one on Lost Canyon road first thing this morning and when the gas tank dropped 1/4 tank to 'E is probably not enough' during the drive, we erred on the side of caution and turned around and headed to town. Six hours later, after hiking to two other caches and driving the absolutely not recommended direct route (3122 to 3108A to 743) from Signal Peak, we finally found ourselves back on Lost Canyon and 1 mile from this cache. Easy find and super neat location. I am amazed and awed when I see what the history of Gunnison/Colorado can show me.
09/16/2014 By 3cacheteers Out caching with the geo-dog. This is her fist big outing since she wounded herself this spring and ended up in a cast for 2 months! Can't tell you how good it feels to have her out running around again! Another great spot flutist! Bequtiful day for a drive with all the colors changing and hunters out running around. Ha ha, lots of orange in the trees and on the ground!
