Dangerous Animals  Abandoned mines  Abandoned Structure

See the parking waypoint for the suggested route description.

There is a date at the entrance to the mine scratched into the rock that says "1917".  A gate was placed at the mine entrance about 10 years ago.  The mine goes back about 150 yards.  I strongly recommend you bring a strong flashlight so  you can look into the mine.

After signing the cache, If you go NW from the cache, and search in the rocks by the stream you can find garnets.

The Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum (free, and open to the public)  has a sample from this mine,  Specimen 15:15  which is copper and malachite.  It was donated by Captain Berthoud.  Captain Berthoud's grave is in the Golden Cemetery.  Berthoud Pass was named after him.  He helped establish the Colorado School of Mines in 1870.  He was the first professor of geology at the school.

Another fun find with Bhob today. The mine was really cool, and we enjoyed the shade and cooler temps from the shade and water. Cache was a quick grab, and in good shape. Thanks for bringing us here, and for the history.

Meandered around the Evergreen/Golden area with "animjason" on a pleasant spring day - this was the third of six geocaches that I found along the way. TN-LN-SL. Thanks !

Took my boyfriend and his two kids on their first Geocache adventure. They absolutely loved it. We were able to find it after having to trek through some high grass and sticks.

Fair amount of water coming out of the mine. No sign of copper
minerals in the dump. Oh well. The garnets run up all the way to
the top of the ridge to the north. Quite a hike to meet up with the
Chimney Gulch Trail, but it worked out well to get the caches along
that trail. TFTC

Nice evening for a short hike! I got to the mine entrance and explored the entrance before searching for the cache. I had no luck in the search for about 20 minutes so i looked at the hint, but still could not find it. So I widened my search radius and looked downhill in case it had been moved by the recent snow and wind. Sure enough, the container was in the ravine in a large thicket. So I, feeling quite intrepid, dove in. I got pretty scraped up going both in and out, but it was worth it! I returned the cache to where i am supposing the orignal location was according to the hint and will send the owner details. Left 0.2€. The mine was pretty cool and there were some pretty sweet views. Tftc!
