COLORADO STATEHOOD HISTORY:
It took sixteen years, four Colorado votes, three suggested state constitutions, and many attempts in Congress, for Colorado to become the 38th state on August 1, 1876 by a proclamation from President Ulysses S. Grant.

The campaign for Colorado statehood has a long and sometimes sordid history. It began in 1859 when Colorado settlers voted on whether they wanted to be a territory or to try for statehood. The vote was 2007 for territory and 1649 for statehood. The reason given was Colorado didn’t have to pay for administering the government as long as it remained a territory. Federal funds would take care of that. So on February 28, 1861, Colorado became a separate territory. The present boundaries were established and have remained unchanged to the present time.

In 1864, Coloradoans again voted against statehood. In 1865, voters in the Colorado territory did approve statehood and adopted a constitution. However, on May 15, 1866, President Andrew Johnson vetoed a bill to admit Colorado as a state because Colorado did not have the population to qualify. In 1868, another attempt to grant Colorado statehood failed because of an inter-party fight. There were several more attempts for Colorado statehood after the 1868 effort, but none passed both the Senate and the House. On July 1, 1876, the combination of Congress, President, and Colorado voters were joined as Colorado voted 15443 to 4062 to adopt a state constitution proposed by a constitutional convention and to become the 38th state.

Headed out this morning with the intention of getting the rest of star we haven't gotten but realized a whole section is gone and it was way too hot for the geo dog so only grabbed a few and then headed back south. It looked very different out here than what I remember when we got the others and was in the awd not the 4wd so parked a little ways in and hiked for fear of starting a fire in the grass.

Had a great time in the North Country today. The typical gale-force winds were even manageable today. Made the quick find. Found all 50 stars a couple years back, and a few new ones that were added back. Also found a bunch of the Colorado Spirit Quest caches to fill the requirement. See my profile for specifics. TFTC

I found the 40 caches in the Colorado Star today. I'll use 16 of those for the star requirement and 24 for the Colorado requirement. I'll upload a photo with the info on the rest of the Colorado caches. GSAK says have 138 so it was easy to qualify. TFTC
