According to the informational sign at the visitors center at Box Canon Falls
Nearly 2 Billion years ago, in the Precambrian Era, the foundation of the Rocky Mountains was laid down. At the time the oldest rocks in the Ouray area were formed—the quartzite found in Box Canon

Throughout geologic time, many faults or cracks formed in the Ouray bedrock. Approximately 220 million years ago a massive fault began to form at Box Canon. Over millions of years the hard Precambrian rocks on the south side were thrust up, while the soft sedimentary rocks on the north dropped down. More recently, alpine glaciers began to carve an opening for the falls.

The Canon continues to erode by the powerful force of water in canyon creek. The fastest water easily washes the soft sedimentary rock away. Sand and gravel slowly grind down the harder rock. The turbulent water at the falls actually plucks out bits of rock. It is this force of water that will continue to play the lead role in Box Canon’s future.

To claim this cache answer the following question. The answer requires you to visit the visitors center.

According to your observations and the information received at the visitors center, what color is the malachite in the cliffs?

We had a great family visit here - 16 hikers aged 4 to 92 enjoyed the lower trail. A few brave souls went to the upper trail. TFTC.

This was such a great stop. The falls were amazing, both below and from above. The Mini Protectors loved it. We can't wait to explore some of the other sights around Ouray. Thanks for the cache!

I’ll do the hikes tomorrow morning, but came up here to check out the area first. The brief glimpse of the gorge I got as I drove over the bridge to the visitor center sure intrigued me! I’ll send the answer now based on the visitor center ore sample (if I have cell or wireless, an iffy proposition in this town, I am finding) and send a correction later if I need to after the walk. TFTEC.

The falls were really cool, the power was unbelievable! One of the signs said that the falls could power the city of Ouray! And the chipmunks!!!! I loved those little guys!

( Answers sent via BriGuy) - A good find with Liquidelle, BriGuy on our Labor day weekend grabbing caches trip. We covered over 20 counties over the three day weekend and even got to dip into Utah. Good traveling as one of the SWAC crew, Best Wishes, DustyRiver
