Cheyenne Mountain's Heart
Different view of the Heart
Getting close (SPOILER!!)
Hiding spot SPOILER!! (Open only in desperation)

WARNING: There have been TWO reported bear sightings by cachers looking for this cache!
The cache is hidden somewhere on a heart-shaped rock outcrop on Cheyenne Mountain. You can see this large outcrop from many locations in Colorado Springs. The outcrop is toward the north end of Cheyenne Mountain. There are some steep parts which will require the use of hands. Not suitable in inclement weather.
The cache is a small plastic container covered in camouflage tape. It contains a waterproof log and some small pencils. The cache can be approached from the north or the south. The northern approach is longer but is mostly trailed to the base of the heart. The southern approach is shorter but may prove to be trickier. I took several GPS readings (it jumps around up near the cache site) and I selected the middle readings that came up most frequently. Use your "geocaching sense" rather than your GPS once you get close. If this heart had four chambers you would want to consider approaching the final from the right ventricle into the right atrium.

Hi - I spent the day 'explor-imenting' by truck around the region south of Pike's, & up Old Stage Rd to get more familiar with trailheads; FS road numbers; Mtn peak names; etc. I took the gpsr (well- loaded with caches) & two different Pike Natn'l Forest maps too. Fall aspens were very nice where they still held leaves; traffic was quite low, and the weather got gradually better as the day wore on!

Whee !! Redemption stop ! I mis-remembered which big rock to stop by on the road...it was still locked to most cars last year... & started out level with the cache but .21 away. Still a monster hike: steep, loose, trashy, and wet, as there'd been a short shower while I was still farther up the road.
With the gpsr battery giving up the ghost, and daylight fading fast I finally scrolled down far enough in logs with my phone to get HD's #'s & plug 'em in. Dunno how, but the Garmin got me there with the battery symbol being pure white (empty); outlined in red; and with a red slash through it. It showed 6' away at the cache - I don't know how it was even still on.

I've been meaning to try this one for quite a while now, but something always came up preventing me from giving it a try. Today I finally I headed over to give this one a go. I parked at the North parking area. Google shows a lot of what I thought would have been shrub oak, but I found that most of the shrub oak has been cleared as well has the smaller pine trees. Made for an easy hike until the terrain started to head UP. The closer I got to GZ the more I started to wonder if I was approaching the cache for the correct side. I finally got to a location and my GPS was pointing over there and I thought to myself that is NOT where I'm going. I recalibrated by GPS and then it told me to go up somemore. I wasn't too key on going up there (I was worried about getting down), but I decide that I could make it. The cache is still safe and sound. TFTC.

Sea Are A Pea !!!

Angry I approached straight from Rob's Running Path - Just go ahead & try that one on for your dose of "tricky". Came all the way to within 100 feet (is the pic an old miner's grave ?? The board is in solid!)
But at that point the topo on the gpsr said I was 350' below the cache. So I made my way around & checked every thing in the hint... Eventually resorted to the last -to- find log; as well as Hartsdale's as mentioned... None of that helped with the fact that 25 feet Northeast from the pretty consistent GZ I was seeing was a 150' cliff!
Well I wasn't going back there.... & now at home I see the spoilers say the 150 feet was prolly' necessary!

An old, broken shovel, and a board in solid.

Holy crud are Ginger the Amazing Geocaching American Bulldog and I out of breath! We approached from the south, so we have quite a hike back to the Taurus. I read the previous three logs of the last finders, and they didn't helped a little, but I was still coming up empty. I'm very afraid of rock climbing, but thrive on fear, so they cancel each other out. I climbed up to one possibility but that was a bust. I read HD's log and went that way, and BINGO! We were at GZ for probably 45 minutes to an hour. As with Spivey's Scenic View #4, my only complaint is that I can only give this one blue ribbon and not five. Thanks!

I was up on Buckhorn when I got the e-mail from K-Tracker asking to do this one; wow, it looked like a good one to do, why not, let's go!! Meeting up in the AM we did the usual meet-and-greet. I'm the new guy in the team but I'm looking forward to the challenge.

After a short drive on Old Stage we deployed, headed down to the cache area; boy, I can see why people have had such a hard time with this one, GZ is showing on the side of a huge rock, looks like some work. KTracker deployed the rope from the top, GoMRT Set to start the climb to the tree, while I anchored and the Skull checked around. After a short climb we knew the tree wasn't GZ (ok, that wasn't the tree). After that we started searching the top and the west side, trying to find the tree that's referenced by other cachers.

Augh, time has passed, we're still searching, getting a little tired. I noted that one of the pictures shows scrub oak and I notice that there's none really where we are. After checking with the team we being heading around the point of the Heart, bear scat, does this mean we're on the right path? A little climb to check an area and yes, there's something of a trail here... GoMRT begins the accent, I'm his backup, don't let your point man hang out alone incase something starts to happen. GoMRT see another ledge with a tree to it, time to climb again, I' ready to support as needed when I hear the call, "I've got scrub oak!!" An other couple of seconds and I hear a whoop, we have cache!!! I climb up and the team begins the celebration, great team work from all. I really enjoyed it.

I'm mixed on the terrain; I think it's a little more than a 4, not worthy of 5 though (no special tools required to get to the cache though we used them on the search).

I shot cords while I was at GZ, mine came in as N38 46.928 W104 52.129.

A great cache, worthy of a favorite point!!!

A sign we're on the trail? I think I need a K9...

We were out on a fun geo-run today with GoMRT, Pohka, and THeSKuLL. We had first come after this on 31 May, but were unable to make the find. After seaching high and low, we eliminated all of the possible hides where our GZ plotted; except for a few tantalizing spots. Not confident we were prepared to access these places, we called forth a partnership of geo-experts that brought together a great pool skills in climbing, technology, geo-sense, and bravery!

Upon arrival from Old Stage Road we agreed to go after the first "tantalizing spot," and with the proper gear , soon crossed that off. Off course AFTER physically checking, we saw the "Not!" picture. We then leveraged our technology to properly visualize the terrain and learn the lessons of past cachers. Attempts at PAF did not bear fruit. We then significantly broadened the search radius, with a "low team" and "high team." As the low team got lower, they identified another "tantalizing spot" that was eliminated after another climb. Just as the "ready to call quits discussions" started, the trail (literally) became warm again thanks to the discovery of bear scat. Instead of 'breaching the rock,' we had much more success with a 'bypassing spiral around the rock' and coming back along a exposed flank via a secret trail. I was convinced that we were going too far from the GZ, but Pohka and GoMRT was totally reenergized after smelling the scat and led the way. Now some of the clues in previous logs began to make sense, the loose roots and certain posted pictures that lead to a ledge where the find was finally made.

All in all, this was a awesome cache and a great afternoon with good friends. Great site selection in a awesome area, hats off to the CO for placing it. In geo-years, it is very old and we hope that it keeps going to offer others the same great enjoyment. However, the coords could use some updating (see Pohka's log) and the cache description could offer more to point cachers in the right direction. Given some of the dangerous terrain, our opinion is that a updated description would be help and appropriate while maintaining its current rating. Again, hats off to the CO for a awesome cache.

Special thanks to the local bear that offered to hold the camera and took our victory photo!

K Trackers had a few of us come out here to help with the find. I passed on the NAN run I had planned for today just to enjoy the fun. After searching around GZ and not finding a spot that looked like the hide location in the pics, a GoMRT and Pohka went with the last resort to see was there. Once K Trackers had the rope from the first attempt all wrapped up, he went after them. I was going to hang out where I was 'cuz I knew it was going to be a painful return. But then I went and, by the time I caught up to them, they had already found it and signed. Nice placement. TFTC!

Pohka, KTrackers, The SkuLL and I beat the rock pretty good. Had to seriously study the photos to get the right angle of attack since GPS bounce is terrible (and concur with Hartsdale's log on going 57 feet NE of GZ on GPS)! Geosense set in on this one, so be prepared to use it. Once we set out on a course of action, off we went by the bear scat and up we went by pulling on trees, scrambling on rock faces until I yell "Found it" so the whole Broadmoor could hear it! Muscles are quivering due to the travel required to get here. This is worthy of the difficulty but the terrain could go up a half. Watched the ravens fly by! Crazy! Tftc
