Colorado Spirit Quest cache in Empire, CO

! The Exciting Cache Series !

COLORADO SPIRIT QUEST

REMEMBER: If you are APPREHENSIVE about cemeteries, AVOID this series.

The Colorado Spirit Quest is a series of Caches placed by many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have 'walked' before us.

There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural and mountain communities across Colorado. This series will introduce you to many of them. The cache pages will provide a virtual history tour of the cemeteries and tombstones.

COLORADO SPIRIT QUEST is not affiliated with any other 'Spirit Quest' group. Special thanks and credit are given to SixDogTeam who started the Indiana Spirit Quest in 2004. The idea has rapidly spread into many states.

After locating the cache container, take some time to reflect back on the lives of those pioneers and the effort it took to make Colorado such a great state.

The CSQ endeavor is an enormous and relentless task and will only flourish if there is a multitude of volunteer cachers willing to place these caches.

New VOLUNTEERS are always Welcome! If you are interested in being a part of this project, send an email to the owner of Colorado Spirit Quest #1 - Mountain Passage.

Please note that each person that places a CSQ cache is responsible for its maintenance.

Thanks to our volunteers

The first known burial is from 1863. A 19th century burial custom at Empire Cemetery was to pile rocks on the freshly covered grave, in an effort to protect the remains from the mountain wildlife.

Peter Geary(1924-1864) is buried here. He was a miner in the Empire District. Unfortunately, he crossed the path of Gallant V. Hunter, An incident occurred when Hunter felt his oxen were being threatened by Geary's dogs. In anger, Hunter shot the dogs, turned and shot Geary point blank. Geary died instantly. Hunter was brought to trial in 1865. He was found not guilty. Legend has it that Hunter deeply regretted the incident and paid for the tombstone marking Geary's grave, spending long hours at the gravesite. The stone is a small sandstone carved marker, discoloured with age.

The old cache was archived, but not removed from the original location.

Congratulations to PapaNonny for FTF!!!

Day 2 of our 3 day trip to the mountains to find caches, do maintenance on our caches and do a little gambling at Black Hawk. Have passed by the exit for Empire many many times but this was the first time we actually went to the town. Quick find and then spent some time walking thru the cemetery.

Thxs for another Spirit Quest cache. This was another wet log, which I don't understand in these water proof containers. I held it in the wind & sun to dry it out so I could sign w/ink.
