Santa Fe Date Nail Collection

"Santa Fe All the Way" was one of the slogans of the old Santa Fe Railway.
This cache happens to be near Santa Fe Drive which, I presume, is named after the Santa Fe railroad. In fact, the railroad track nearest Santa Fe Drive at this location was built by the Santa Fe railroad! I love how this all ties together.

One of the relatively unknown railroad collectibles are date nails which were at one time inserted into railroad ties to date when they were placed in service in the track. The Santa Fe was the biggest user of such nails.

And here is a picture of my old Santa Fe date nail collection:

Another user of date nails was (and still is) utility companies. At the location specified for this cache, you will find a wooden utility pole. And it has a date nail in it! This was the year that this pole was put there.

You have to use the number from this date nail to determine where the actual cache is. The actual cache is within walking distance of the utility pole and you need not climb any fences.

To get the latitude of the actual cache, reverse the numbers from the date nail and add that to the three digit portion of the latitude. Then add 11 more.

To get the longitude of the actual cache, multiply the number from the date nail by 6 and add that to the three digit portion of the longitude. Carry the one.

It is not a good idea to park on Santa Fe Drive. You can park in the neighborhoods to the east and access the trail from there. The best spot is by some mailboxes.

I have heard that it is not unusual to see elk along here though I haven't seen any. I have seen them in the open space on the other side of Santa Fe, however. If you see any, please include your sighting in the log.

If you see a train go by while at this cache, please log that, too. I saw a BNSF coal train going north when I hid the cache.

Original items placed in this cache are: - several Santa Fe date nails (feel free to take one) - a First to Find geocoin - a Strange Rhino travel bug - a squeaky frog - some miscellaneous other "things" - the usual logbook and pencil

 Hints

That low lying area would be a nice place to hide a cache but it was full of water when I went to actually hide it. If you are not sure what the numbers are on the nail, press your finger on it for 10 seconds and then read your finger! You have to be pretty tall for this, though. There are no 1's on the nail.

Based on emails with Benj59, I discovered that the puzzle was slightly off so I have adjusted it. Weird that it lasted over 2 years without discovering this! It was about 30 or 40 feet off.

I got the info I needed at WP1 but couldn't find the final. I tried on both sides of the ravine but with the snow, I was never able to spot anything. Even with multiple attempts at some snow clearing.

I messaged the CO to confirm my math and coordinates. My math was good but apparently the puzzle needs a slight adjustment. I’m sure I would’ve come across it without the snow.

Anyway, the CO has graciously given me permission to log as found. Great area over here and as I was searching the second time this morning I did see a unique train going past. But as I was on the other side of the ravine, I didn’t have a good angle for a picture. It was an Army transport train with tanks and trucks. I am including a picture from the side where the cache actually is though.

Thanks for the hide cajrrman. I appreciate you keeping this cache active for everyone to enjoy.

After visiting with some clients I looked for a cache that would fit today's bill to keep my streak going. I love non traditional caches so I came over to take a look at this one.

Not sure what I did with my math but I ended up 60 feet off and was having a hard time finding it. I reached out to precious finder but wasn't any help. I kept checking a few areas back and forth without success. Decided to try another angle and thankfully the black box appeared. Extremely thankful I didn't see any snakes today as I have seen that are out early this year. Also did not get lucky enough to see any trains near Chatfield but I did just come from a clients house and they have model garden trains all throughout their backyard. I am fascinated with trains so was bummed I did t see any. Elk, deer, coyotes and all other creatures were long gone from the area at this time of year.

Found Santa Fe All the Way! on March 17, 2017 using Cachly for iOS.

Thank you, cajrrman for placing a fun cache for all of us to enjoy. I look forward to finding more of your caches.

Heh324 had a clever way to get what we needed for stage one. From there we ambled to the final and had no trouble finding the cache. All in all, this was a fun multi with great views. After we signed the log, and train came by to congratulate us. Who doesn't love a good omen! Thanks for the fun hide and for one more degrees in the 360 challenge. Favorite point added.
