CONGRATULATIONS TO Pixel Magic FOR THE FTF!

This is a tribute cache to egroeg38, who joined the geocaching ranks in March 2009. In the intervening years George has contributed much to the fun and excitement many of us in No Co territory have experienced in our cache-finding activities. The 35 caches in his Mountain Vista series have been challenging and highly creative, and have raised the ante by a good measure in terms of the search techniques required to locate some of these jewels! The entire Northern Colorado geocaching community recognizes that when a new egroeg38 cache is published, we better have a significant amount of time available for our search. Sometimes we need it, and even more! And after we’ve made the find, we know that the experience of having found that specific cache will stay with us as an indelible memory, and will be fondly recalled.

For a long time I’ve wanted to make the hike up Mt. Werner to find Buddy’s Run, a virtual cache near the top of the mountain. But I never seemed to have the time during my fleeting dashes through Steamboat Springs. This time I made getting to this virtual a priority of my trip, and I began the hike from the parking area very early in the morning. I was aware as I progressed up the steep terrain, that skiing on Mt. Werner and the adjacent Storm Peak has been one of George’s passions. I was also aware that I was hiking up to the location of George’s very first cache find: Buddy’s Run! His find log, written on April 8, 2009, stated: “Passed it 75 days this year. Had to get horizontal to read it. Would like to see more caches on the mountain. This is my first find. Thanks. egroeg38".

egroeg38 Near Buddy's Run

Well, George, you wanted more caches on Mt. Werner. Here’s one for you, placed below your very first geocaching find. Have fun with it. It’s a silver bison tube, and it should be findable even with good snow depth. Search for it on one of your numerous future ski descents from Buddy’s Run. The satellite transmission signal is not particularly consistent at this location, so you might need to play around for awhile before scoring on this gem. But that’s only fair...you make all of us do that when we search for one of your hidden treasures.

Those of you who enjoy geocaching in the Steamboat Springs area now have your caching delights amplified a bit–George has begun a series of hides in the area (the “Boat” caches) that will undoubtedly provide you with some special challenges. Be certain to acknowledge your appreciation in your found logs. And acknowledge it further by making the effort to get up Mt. Werner to find this tribute cache.

I'm sorry that AussiePam has experienced the trouble she has had with this cache. It would be quite surprising if it is not in place. But it's also clear that in most winters it is deeply buried in snow by February. Those successful snow-season finders have generally mentioned that they discovered it near or at the bottom of a deep melt-out cone around the tree. The snow accumulating at Mt. Werner is much more than I had anticipated it would normally be at the time I hid the cache. Cachers attempting this cache in the summer always appear to find it pretty easily.

I missed this one last year and thought I would give it another go this ski season.. Once again failure. And I had three passes. I must be more or less in the right spot. And I love tree skiing. But no joy. George's Tribute Cache mocks me every time I go by. AAAARGHGHGHGHGHGH. I've still got a week in Steamboat Springs, so will keep trying. I'm an incurable optimist. AND I HAVE TO GET THIS ONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(It was found once in February, but no finds this year. Maybe the snow is too deep???)

Anyway, thank you Denali41. And greetings from Sydney Australia...

Found with Java Chip. So nice to have caches to find on the long walk to the top. Enjoyed the views through the changing aspen trees. TFTC!

I'm determined to qualify for the Colorado virtual matrix (one day), so I have to get the virtual at the top of this mountain. Fortunately, there are several caches along the way, which makes the long, hot hike up from the gondola easier.

It took me a while to home in on the right tree, and it wasn't an easy reach for someone of my stature, but I got it in the end. I'll post a picture when I get home. Thanks!

Very disappointing. I love George's mountain Boat caches and even got an FTF on his latest. I'm here visiting from Australia- and try to come to Steamboat for a couple of weeks skiing at this time each year. LOVE these mountains.

I did my homework on the logs, so knew what I was looking for and its approximate position. Did a couple of ski passes, and then yesterday afternoon, I thought the conditions would give me my best shot. Less than usual snow depth, and wind had cleaned up the tree branches too.

At the same time, I was aware that although this cache was found once in the month of February (2016), it has also not been found since last August. Not propitious, but I'm an optimist.

I located the tree, left my skis, taking just a pole with me. Lay on the rim of the tree well - moving position to cover all 360 degrees around, could see the denuded branches well down. Nothing. I wasn't going to give in easily, and spent a good hour poking about. Nothing.

Disappointing outcome, but still a good adventure..and a great idea to honour George. Thank you Denali41 !

I stopped here briefly on my hike down from Mt. Werner but my GPS was bouncing too much and I wasn't about to go bushwhacking when I still had 6 miles of hiking to go. I couldn't even find the location in the picture, oh well...
