I DECIDED TO PLACE CACHES IN HONOR OF ALL THE MEN WHO SERVED WITH THE AIR FORCE/LOWRY AFB TITAN I MISSILE FORCE DURING A VERY DIFFICULT TIME IN OUR HISTORY. IT WAS THEIR DEDICATION, SACRIFICE, AND SERVICE THAT MADE THE TITAN I PROGRAM AS STRONG AS IT WAS.

PLEASE REFER TO MY WEBSITE FOR PICTURES AND LINKS FOR THE TITAN I ICBM MISSILE SYSTEM:

THERE WERE 6 TITAN I ICBM MISSILE SITES IN COLORADO; 724A, 724B, 724C AND 725A, 725A B, AND 725A C. THEY WERE INSTALLED IN THE EARLY 1960'S BY PRESIDENT KENNEDY TO COUNTER THE COLD WAR THREAT OF A STRIKE-FIRST NUCLEAR ASSAULT ON THE U.S. AND IT WAS A GOOD THING THAT HE DID, FOR IF IT WERE NOT FOR THIS CAPABILITY, THE CUBA MISSILE CRISIS WOULD HAVE ENDED VERY DIFFERENTLY. IT'S A SHAME THAT WE NEEDED OUR OWN STRIKE-FIRST NUCLEAR OFFENSIVE, BUT IT WAS THE ONLY THING THAT KHRUSHCHEV LISTENED TO.

BASE 725A IS JUST ABOUT 200 YARDS TO THE WEST OF WHERE THIS CACHE IS HIDDEN. YOU CAN SEE TWO ODD LOOKING SETS OF PIPES PROTRUDING OUT OF THE GROUND. THEY ARE THE EXHAUSTS FOR THE INTERNAL DEISEL GENERATORS. YOU CAN’T SEE THEM BUT THE PADS COVERING THE LAUNCH TUBES ARE STILL THERE, AS WELL AS THE REST OF THE ACCESS PORTS. THIS SITE ALONG WITH 724C OFF OF QUINCY ROAD IS OWNED BY A PRIVATE INDIVIDUAL (PLEASE DON’T TRESSPASS!!).

THESE MISSILES WERE NEVER NEEDED FORTUNATELY, BUT THEIR PRESENCE AND READINESS DETERRED THE SOVIETS FROM ATTEMPTING A NUCLEAR STRIKE OF THEIR OWN. THEY WERE EVENTUALLY DECOMMISSIONED AND REPLACED BY A MORE CAPABLE TITAN II ICBM SYSTEM, WHICH HAVE NOW BEEN DECOMMISSIONED AS WELL.

Out and about on a Sunday caching run with the always cheerful herndonrd. We decided to head out to the plains because we felt like grabbing a bunch today. We managed to find and sign over 40 caches, which was pretty good for a few hours of "work".

I enjoyed watching herndonrd make the quick grab here, which he did for most of the caches we found today (Translation: I don't move fast enough). After we did the whole sign and replace thing we were back in the geomobile and off to the next one. Thanks for the fun hide and for your contribution to a great day of caching.
