This is number 12 in a series of historical points within Douglas County Colorado.

This Geocache appears to be in error because it is found in Elbert County. However, back then there was no Elbert County. It was all Douglas County to the state line.

There is a monument and other information at this geocache.

With the discovery of gold at Russellville and more miners moving in to the area, the Indians were finally figuring out that the situation was not temporary and started becoming a bit nasty. On June 18, 1864, four members of the Hungate family were massacred near Running Creek. They had operated a "layover station" on the Smoky Hill Trail, now the Smoky Hill Road. John Tallman was one of the first to reach the site because he ran a sawmill nearby. The bodies were taken to Denver and "put on display" as a warning of the warrior's wrath. The supposed warrior was Cheyenne Chief Roman Nose. The actual massacre was done by members of an Arapaho tribe. The bodies were eventually buried at the Tallman sawmill.

The Hungate massacre was what prompted Colonel Chivington's infamous massacre of Indians at Sand Creek in the same year.

A few years later, another family was massacred.

To claim this geocache email the name of this other family. Also, mention one item of information that you find interesting.
Photos are fine. JimReeb@ecentral.com

Adding a new county here, enjoyed the quick virtual. Stephenjha sending answers.

Kicking off the summer with a great American road trip to celebrate M4ISU’s belated birthday!  After months of planning, I am finally on the road with Stephenjha as my copilot.  I am logging as we go which makes it easier to keep track of the HUGE playlist we are hoping to accomplish.  If all goes well, I’ll drive 2500+ miles, add 50+ new counties, see 5 different states, find some cool cemeteries, increase my Fizzy and Jasmer progress, find 20+ virtuals, a handful of Earthcaches, a Wherigo, and maybe a webcam or 2!  It’s going to be a crazy weekend!

TFTC. SL. Thanks for placing this hide for my enjoyment, I really appreciate your effort! CACHE ON!!!

We were at the Elbert county fairgrounds from northern Colorado for a weekend of team penning and ranch sorting. I’d been here once before but didn’t get the chance to grab any caches. I drove my car really fast to beat the truck and horse trailer to town so I could get this virtual. Enjoyed learning the history of the town. Got the cache and won myself a buckle. Double the fun. Thanks Jim Reeb for the virtual and the history.
