We wanted to do a memorable find for #4900 (not a milestone on geocaching.com, but it still was for us!). The weather was cool, we were up for a hike, we enjoyed Dusty's Unbelievable a few years ago, and we had some time. Sounded like a perfect scenario for Dusty's Devil.
We wish we could say we made this find all on our own, but it wasn't to be. We usually are "stupid blind" when it comes to a lot of caches, but that wasn't our excuse today. This was just one camoed hide! We looked at a lot of the "tricky" places we have seen hides in the past, even peeked behind a lot of tree moss--ha! After almost an hour of looking and seeing a storm moving in, we reached out to a previous finder and he quickly provided us the help we needed to spot the little guy. Kuddos to those who found this one without any help!! Signed the log, replaced cache as found, and beat it out as the raindrops were starting to fall. Thanks Dusty for a devil of a hide!

I thought this would be find #4400, but this cache had other ideas. I knew I had searched for this one a long time ago, so I checked the logs and realized it was 10 years ago! I said I'd come back on a warmer day, but I was in the area and there was no snow on the ground. Once I got to the coordinates it looked familiar and not much has changed since my last visit. I turned over rock after rock, pine cone after pine cone, stick after stick, but didn't find anything that might contain a log sheet. I checked previous logs on my phone for some kind of hint but even the satellite photo didn't nudge me closer to my goal. I ended up making a 50' circle around the coordinates going up and down the hill multiple times. My efforts were in vain as when I left I was no closer to discovering that which has eluded me. I'd really like to mark this as a favorite, but I have to find it first. Until then, it shall be my nemesis cache. Feel free to taunt me with hints as I won't be able to find it without some help.

Last night I was awoken by my SATCOM Operator. An encrypted Operation Order had come in from Estes; tasking me to conduct a short-notice, rapid deployment Geo-Operation. Although the objective was clear, find a enjoyable cache, the target was less clear. After some deliberations, I nominated this cache as the target. I was aware of its fearsome reputation and could see the high DNF causality figures for myself. Given this situation, I was hoping Estes would agree to this one as the target. I figured I could stand back with my arms crossed, supervise, and let her do all of the hard work. We soon got the deployment green light from GCHQ and a few hours later successfully linked up at the assembly area. I was hopeful, but not confident, we would make the find.
Movement to the GZ was relatively easy and straightforward. This had me worried, given the terrain rating, as I was fearful of terrain tom-foolery at the GZ. Once we arrived at GZ, I saw the challenge that was before us. Undeterred, we began the hunt in earnest. My gut had a hunch for what we were looking for, while this hunch was pretty close, it unfortunately did not help much with the hunt. We were determined not suffer defeat and retreat on Veterans Day, so we made sure to check all over. We even checked unlikely areas requiring teamwork to search; I served as the team and she did the work. Unfortunately, these areas also did not result in a find.
At this point, we had searched the area for about an hour and felt we had done a good job, but had nothing to show for it. We even checked various theories, presupposing that over the time since the last find something may have happened to the cache. One again, we came up empty. We had searched for about an hour, and had decided to throw in the towel. We did the proverbial, one last look over our shoulder as we walked away…and no way, what was that? Closer examination revealed it was the coveted cache. Good thing heads can rotate. Despite the advanced age of the cache, it still in great shape. I’ve had this one on my list for a long time, so it was good to make the find today. Thanks to Dusty for placing this nice cache, offering a fun hunt, and keeping it well maintained; TFTC.
It was an extra bonus to make the find on this one after it hadn’t been found for almost two years. I keep track on “lonely finds” for challenge caches, so it is always good to increase my competitiveness. With this find, I now have (counting only 1 year or more lonely) a total of 119 years, 2 months lonely time on 59 caches from 11 North American States & Provinces.

What better thing to do on Veterans Day than go caching with a veteran. How about an Army veteran! And in honor of Veterans Day, he should choose the cache. Of course K Trackers chose a cache that hadn't been found in close to two years, with a 4 difficulty rating. (Should be a 4.5.) K knows I prefer the high terrain ratings over the high difficulty ratings, but no matter, as it's Veterans Day and he's a veteran. As per the CO's instructions, we replaced all the rocks we moved. The only things disturbed were the insects and larvae living comfortably beneath them. We managed not to disturb the tree as well by choosing the tiniest between us to climb. WingsAndTales and ernie66 would be shocked to know that I actually climbed a tree. I haven't climbed a tree since I fell out of one when I was 5. But you can't show fear in front of an Army Ranger. I have no idea how long we searched and I'm guessing this cache has moved around a bit over the years, but it was only after we decided to give up and were heading out that K spotted the cache. That was an amazing find. Fun cache and fun Veterans Day.

TFTC! We were hiking in the area to find another cache. Once we found that one, we decided to give this one a try. Definitely had to blaze a trail. Good to have GPS in hand. Came to GZ and tried to figure out what we were looking for and where. Luck played a role. Looked in the right place and found it. Signed the log and left. Cache is in good condition.

Resolving a DNF from over a year ago. Last time I was alone and dumbfounded with an hour search. Brought the Mrs this time and she found it in less than two minutes. Funny how caching works. Thanks for the hide and the adventure!

This one is very close to one of our member's parental house. We tried it a few years ago without any success. This time we weren't gonna give up. After looking for at least 45 minutes we finally saw something that could be artificial. Yes? yes? YESSS!!
What a hide... Our favorite is for at least 50% dedicated to ourselves
TFTC!!

Nice hike in an open space I didn't even know about until recently. Thanks to my 'phone a friend' for pointing us away from the wrong direction. Thanks to 'rsfixit' for accompanying me on this adventure. Thanks for placing and maintaining this cache for us to find and enjoy! Awarding a highly-coveted JazzMan Favorite Point!

Out caching with JazzManCOS on this hot summer morning. These caches along Union Blvd have been on my to do list for a long time, glad to finally cross them off. This one really was a Devil, but we finally located it. TFTC

Thanks for the cache!! Wow, this was a tough one! I decided I needed a good one today on the way home. I have been looking at this area recently and this one stood out a bit. It was easy enough of a hike to the GZ but the find was very difficult! I spent about 45 minutes searching high and low. I just couldn't come up with anything and resorted to calling a previous finder. Even with directions it still took another 15 minutes before I had the cache in hand. The recent rains have washed a lot of the area out and the growth of the plants in the area made it difficult as well. With the cache in hand I signed and replaced back as found. What a devil of a cache this one is! Thanks again for another great hide!
