So, how high do trees grow in Colorado, specifically Pikes Peak? I always picture timberline being somewhere between 11000 and 12000 feet but I know it varies depending on the climate at the particular location. As I was hiking up the western slope towards Devil’s Playground, I thought I’d mark the highest tree I could find by placing a geocache at its base.
This “Survivor Tree” is about 12440 feet! Okay, I know it looks more like a small bush; trees just don’t grow very tall at this altitude! Thanks to the rock protecting it, it’s alive and probably growing very slowly!

Enjoy this cache and let me know if you see any higher trees!

Got an early start from the Crags trailhead this morning and had a very nice hike up to Devil's Playground. Weather was perfect, so I took several detours once up top (and on the way down) to pick up some nearby caches. My goodness, some of these have been lonely for a while! Found it downhill a little way, but the description makes it obvious where it was supposed to be - it is safely back in its home now! The log was soaked somehow...dried it out for a few minutes so I could sign it. Thank you for placing this cache!

Wow, what a day. Weather, views, sights and caches. The plan was to take advantage of the weather and find some Pikes Peak caches. Particularly at the Devil's Playground. The furthest in the plan was Survivor Tree, so that was first up. As the trail began heading down, I wondered how far. But it turned out to be manageable. Hardy tree. Thanks for placing a cache here and bringing me out from the road.

This was the first stop on our trek to the top of Pikes Peak. It was a welcome break before the first real difficult part of the climb. TFTF

Up hiking from the Craig's/Devils Playground parking area to the Devils Playground area and made my first find. Cache was out in the open and have to think the CO wanted it with the tree so I placed it with the tree for the next finder. Cache was in good shape. Appreaciate the placement, time to move on up.
