This 3-part multi cache takes you on a 4-mile round trip into The Raggeds Wilderness, named appropriately for the character of the surrounding towering mountains. The single-track Dark Canyon Trail 830 follows the spectacular fast-flowing Anthracite Creek at an elevation of slightly under 7000 feet. There is just a gentle elevation gain (250’) and much of the trail is tree-covered and often in a narrow canyon as you head toward Bear Gulch. Recommended for ages 6-80, and of course dogs are welcome too.

The coordinates above are for the trailhead, not for the cache. The cache itself is located 30 feet east of N38° AA.AAA’ W107° BB.BBB’. You have to find the correct numbers for AA.AAA and BB.BBB.

For the time being, POINT A IS THE SIGN PICTURED ABOVE - IT PROBABLY HAD BEEN MOVED - JUST START ON THE TRAIL AND LOOK FOR THE SIGN SHORTLY - YOU CAN'T MISS IT. IGNORE THE FOLLOWING COORDINATE! (edit 5/25/12) From the trailhead, go to Point A (38° 57.582' 107° 15.113'), and look for some sign giving you the actual degree-minutes of the final waypoint’s north latitude. Record that number as AA.AAA’.

Now go to Point B (38° 57.681' 107° 13.963'). Here you’ll look above a rock on the creek-side of the trail for a clue giving you the degree-minutes of the final waypoint’s west longitude. Record this number as BB.BBB’.

Now go to 38° AA.AAA' 107° BB.BBB' and locate the intersection of two foot paths. The cache is 30 feet to the east. The ammo can originally contains GC.com laser-light keychain, GC pencils, patch, lanyard, GeoToken, 2 Chinese dolls, dog fetch stick, bandana and treat pouch, AKC souvenir pin, and logbook and pencils.

The trailhead is located at the east dead-end of the Erickson Springs Recreational Area, which is 7 miles south on CR 12 (signed Kebler Pass) from Highway 133. No mechanized vehicles are allowed within the wilderness Area.

This one would have gotten a favorite point IF we found it. Part a was .3 away from the coordinates given, and we found it on the way pit. Part b was covered in sap and unreadable. It we loved the trail. Beautiful. Thanks for bringing us here.

I was in the area riding horses with a group of friends. I had time one afternoon to drive to this trailhead after a shorter ride and hike out to the waypoints. I have ridden this trail in a previous visit a few years ago & it is beautiful. I had downloaded the cache to my GPS (certainly NO internet here!) but the pictures do not download so I wasn't sure exactly what sign I was looking for so I checked all of them along the way until I found the tag. I found the 2nd tag using the coordinates & made a guess at a couple of the numbers (all those directions were a little confusing to say the least, which coordinates were correct?). So on I went to the final coordinates. I wasn't sure if the cache was 30' from the little intersection & the coordinates were where it was or was it 30' from my coordinate answer? I looked for over 20 minutes at the coordinates expanding it a little bit. Then I tried 30' out & bingo there it was!

Second attempt today and I was able to make the final grab. It was a quick one, no footpath intersection exists, but follow the directions and you will find the obvious spot. Beautiful hike yesterday. Parts of it looked like an old permian-age swamp, full of ferns and large logs with a dense canopy. If a dinosaur would have come around the corner, it wouldn't have surprised me. Thanks for the adventure. Cache is still in good shape.

Found the waypoints, but couldn't find a way to get to final. Seems like it would be up the mountain. After I got home, I plotted it up, No Way! It IS at the top of the mountain. Went round and round, double checked coords, triple checked coords, something just isn't correct. Luckily I took pics of the waypoints. Finally after looking at that pic over and over, I realized that I transposed two digits. AARRGGHHH!!! With the true coords, it makes much more sense.

Still, it was a nice hike on an overcast day. Thanks for getting me out to a new canyon. I'll return for the glory.

TFTC! This turned out to be not as difficult as SoldierGrrrl and I thought it would be. The hike was beautiful and the ground was hard. I put my gps in my pocket and lost reception for a bit and had to go deeper than necessary where the canyon widened to get it back then backtrack to GZ. The most difficult thing was reading the clue at the second location. We wrote down the possibilities and checked out both locations. With the help of the clues, we had no trouble finding the cache.

WOO HOO! CB_Beauty and I grabbed a smiley today on this one after waiting for perfect trail conditions, and today did not disappoint The trail was hard, frozen over in most of the portions in the shade, but rutted with horse tracks. We had a beautiful walk out an on to the cache. I was looking on one part of the hiding spot, when CB_Beauty walked up from the other and spotted it, like the eagle eye that she is. Cache was in great shape. Took nothing, left toy Soldier. TFTC. Agree with another log, that the clues were tough to read, especially at point B, so we wrote down both possibilities and when we started to look, one just made much more sense, and was the correct spot. Favorite point.

Did the hike. Found the clues. Clues were very hard to read. GZ was a long way from the described location. Searched both areas. No Cache.

I've been wanting to do this cache all summer, but it RAINED all summer! It rained in September, too. We finally got a decent weekend to try to find this cache. However, what should have been one of the most enjoyable hikes of the year was spoiled by the condition of the trail. Hunting horses have trampled the trail into a series of wet, sloppy mudpits, which make the trail un-hike-able (unless you like sloshing around in ankle-deep mud). Hiking beside the trail is extremely difficult, because the trail is lined by bushes and scrub oaks. So ... we had a very difficult hike. I can't recommend this hike during hunting season. RockDok and I used to backpack this trail in the 1970's and 1980's, and the trail was NEVER like this!!! Were it not for the pursuit of this intriguing cache, we would have bailed out and gone home.

Aside from all that, we found "Point A" at: 38 degrees 57.606/ 107 degrees 15.439. "Point B" is a really nice place to hang out and have lunch. (It took us over an hour to reach "Point B" from the trailhead, because of the conditions!!!) I had a pre-conceived notion as to where the final geocache was hidden, but I was WRONG! Also, there is no longer an intersection of two foot-trails near the final cache, however, the GPS signal is very accurate -- it was accurate at ALL points! I would mark this cache as one of my "favorites", but the condition of the trail was NOT fun. (You had to watch your feet all the time, so you didn't have the leisure to fully enjoy the scenery.) At any rate -- TFTC.

BTW ... A string of horses and mules passed us by during the hike, and the hunting guide made a comment about "You need hip-waders down there". I had to BITE my tongue.

Beautiful day for a hike but we were still a little early for a fall color display. Trail was pretty muddy and sloppy in some areas. Enjoyed this multi-cache. Left a paracord key fob. Took Katy's 1st TB

Nice Multi-cache! We completed the series while on a hike up Anthracite Creek as far as the junction of the North and Middle Forks. We found both Point A and B easily however we had difficultly deciphering the coordinate numbers. We spent quite a bit of time looking for the final cache due to misinterpreting the clue and the comments of others. T: bike repair kit. L: TB. SL. T4TC!
