The various owners of the Highlands Ranch Mansion and the Arapahoe Hunt Club impacted the history of the Colorado Fox Hunt.
The Arapahoe Hunt Club was founded in 1907 in Denver, Colo. The club was originally located on what is now the eighth green of the Denver Country Club golf course.
In 1927 the Denver Country Club began development, and the club’s activity ceased. The history of the fox hunt in Colorado changed again two years later when Lawrence C. Phipps, Jr. reactivated the club; Frank E. Kistler, owner of the Highlands Ranch Mansion, invited Phipps to relocate the club to the southern part of the property, known as Diamond K.
Arapahoe Hunt Club members would often meet at the Mansion before a hunt and head out from there. They would hunt on open land extending from what is now County Line Rd. on the north, Sedalia on the south, and I-25 on the east. After the hunt they would gather at the Mansion or at a picnic grounds at the base of the windmill for breakfast.
In 1937, Kistler sold the property to Phipps, who retained ownership until 1976. Despite the property changing ownership numerous times thereafter, the Arapahoe Hunt Club continued to hunt the land and maintain kennels on the property until 1985 when development of Highlands Ranch began.
