CONGRATULATIONS TO ArkF FOR THE FTF!!
In August 2015 I archived the original version of this nice Traditional cache (GC1C46B) after the USFS announced that they might never reopen the Young Gulch Trail. It made little sense to keep is as a disabled cache under such uncertainty. The trail was initially closed for almost a year after the High Park Fire of June 2012 ravaged some of the area, making trail travel unsafe. After some soil stabilization as well as felling of partially burned trees the trail was reopened for a brief period in summer 2013. Then the devastating September 2013 flooding hit the region and the Forest Service again closed the trail. Administrators vacillated over whether to expend the necessary effort and funds to rebuild sections of the trail that had been obliterated, and even as late as 2015 and 2016 uncertainty continued. They have now completed the work, and earlier this week the trail was reopened to hikers. Beautiful bridges have been constructed for several crossings of Young Creek, and in sections the trail has been rerouted. It's a super location, and deserving of your attention! A nice feature of the trail rules allows dogs to be off leash if they are under voice control--just as in Hewlett Gulch! So it's a marvelous hike to make with your canine companions. I had a fun hike with my puppies Orizaba and Chimborazo as I checked on the container and confirmed the coordinates. I've kept the Difficulty and Terrain ratings that were used in the original cache, and the specific location is the same as before. So go after this cache and enjoy your hike!
The Young Gulch Trail is approximately 4 miles long; this cache is roughly at the halfway point. The trail is beautiful and very scenic, with Young Creek snaking through the canyon. The trail-head is located southwest of the Ansel Watrous Campground, 12.8 miles up Poudre Canyon from U.S. 287. The cache container is an ammo can.
This cache can be found in combination with trying for the "Young Gulch Multi—Reprised" (GC8G9JM), which is on the same trail. Find both caches, and score a "double" on your hike!
I hope you enjoy this area as much as I did as I re-created this geocaching opportunity for you. I'm grateful to the USFS for rebuilding and opening this trail for us to appreciate! Bring your family. Bring your dog. Bring a picnic lunch. Happy Caching!
NOTE. On the inside lid of the ammo box is a message providing a distance from this cache to a puzzle cache final. The distance needs to be used in conjunction with other information located in the Final stage of the "Young Gulch Multi--Reprised" cache. Although it might be tempting to try finding the puzzle cache using only the information in the lid of this ammo box, don't waste your time. It cannot be found with only this direction, even though you might believe it is possible to do so!

02/02/2020 By icezebra11 Happy Palindrome Day, 02022020! Two days ago I was up Big Thompson canyon hiding a new cache and when I parked to go hide it, my odometer showed 111,111 mile and the date was 1/31. Palindromes galore this week.
With a weather forecast of 70° today and snow and cold starting tomorrow, I figured I better after it. I have never been up Young Gulch. We moved here in 2010 and I didn't hike it before the High Park fire in 2012. Then the flood washed everything out in 2013 and the trail was closed for six more years. I was happy when I saw that it recently reopened. Thanks to all the volunteers that helped rebuild it!!
This one took me a little bit to find. The coordinates bounced around a fair bit in the cache vicinity but after searching around a few nearby objects without success, I finally came up with the container. Little did I know, this would be my only cache find of the day. I had a long hike but my luck was poor today. Anyway, I signed this log and continued up the trail. Thanks Denali41 for the Reprise!!!

11/23/2019 By ArkF Thanks for the new cache and for the knowledge that the Young's Gulch trail is open again. Was going to go to Hewlett Gulch today until I saw the new caches here get published. They've done a nice job on the new trail, though it's been long enough I don't really remember what the old trail was like. Found the cache in good condition with a blank log for the {FTF}.
A couple inches of snow on the ground, but a nice warm day, didn't need a jacket. Some parts of the trail were quite slick, but was mostly ok. Lots of people hiking, but it thinned out to not very many by this point on the trail. I was glad the cache description warned me about not using just this piece of info for the puzzle, because it was tempting to try.
